Office turned Guest Bedroom
Two things I truly love are designing spaces to fit needs + serving others. So when my sister in law called me and said her cousin from Oregon was wanting to come and visit but the office she was hoping would be a guest room someday was, well, still an office, I was happy to say “yes!” when she asked if we could get it flipped in time. It feels so good to help others create a space that serves their family!
The room itself was slightly ackward with a window in the corner and a thin rectangular shape. 9 ft x 14 ft is what we were given to work with. Not the biggest room, but also not the smallest! The room was also without a closet so it really was the perfect room to either be an office or guest room.
Before
My sister in law laughed, “this will be a great before photo!” She wasn’t joking! We did a quick shop around her house to decide if we could be use anything she already had and make a game plan. I instantly saw a fun a cozy wallpaper going into this space.
We quickly came up with the plan of bold walls with dark wallpaper and light colored paint, filled with neutral bedding and items around the room. A space for luggage and clothing items to be hung up was a must plus, since this room has a shared bathroom across the hall and vanity of some sort to get ready at would be needed, too! I love pulling an “inspiration board” together when planning a space even if we end up going off plan. Which we did as that always seems to be what happens!
When you find the perfect wallpaper that is opposite of what you were planning…you switch the plan!
I fell in love with this wall paper from Spoonflower. I mean, come on! How beautiful is this swatch?! We opted for the Vintage Cream color option and decided we would paint the bottom 2/3rd of the wall a dark color instead of the the lighter color we originally planned. There are truly so many colors you could paint when using this wallpaper from light pink to steel blue to the teal green we opted for. We used Dutchboy paint with the color mix of LRV 8 R 42 G 86 B 91. (You can take these numbers to any paint store and have it custom mixed). This was a guess on the color matching for us since we didn’t have the wallpaper in hand when we picked the paint. If we didn’t have a time constraint to get this project done I would have opted for waiting to color match the wallpaper after we got it. This was more green than our original plan for the paint, but it blended well!

I was so excited about the rug I had ordered only to have it arrive and it was the WRONG rug! Ugh! I ended up ordering one that I had debated on but had decided it was too pink. When we first unrolled it my SIL and I decided it would have to go. Only to get the room put together and decide that we actually really liked it! Maybe we will swap it out at another time but for now it works.
Here are the direct links to almost everything we used + what I had planned in the original design mockup that we didn’t end up using. Happy Creating!!
Original Plan:
Farmhouse Lamp (comes as a set of two, didn’t use because it looked to short in the space, but so cute!!)
Vanity (doubles as a nightstand in the room)
Wooden Pegged Coat Rack (didn’t use because we opted to go with black instead)
Floral Wallpaper (we used the color option Vintage Cream)
3 Bulb Rattan Light Fixture (loved this look and it was what we were going for, great price for three bulbs but when we went to put it up we decided we wanted something bigger)
Light Natural Wood Bench (didn’t use because we opted for a darker look)
Blue Velvet Curtains (actual color is aegean blue, 96 in in length; we kept these but plan to eventually swap them out for a dusty rose color)
Curtain Rod | Curtain Clips (didn’t end up using because the curtains were long enough; sometimes the length advertised isn’t accurate)
White Ball Mirror (full length; I’ve loved this mirror for a while and thought it would look great in the space; however, this particular mirror wasn’t in budget so I opted for the mirror we used and planned to glue and paint half spheres to it to dupe this look…only to end up really liking the mirror we used as is! It will have to be a project for another time!)
Blue + Sand Rug (this was the rug I thought I ordered. Whoops! We were going to order it and swap it out but we ended up really like the one I ordered by mistake, lol!)
Woven Headboard Bed Frame (another item I have loved for a while but knew this wouldn’t fit the budget; I had planned to make a dupe of the headboard and just attach it to the wall with 2x2s and some canvas fabric I already had but we ended up finding the one we used on Marketplace for $25 and loved the look)
Bedding: Duvet | Duvet Cover Set | Accent Pillow | Dusty Rose Sheet Set
Swaps/Add Ins to the Plan:
Black Wall Mirror (full length)
Large Rattan Light Fixture (we opted to hang the light without the white glass insert to fit the look we were going for; we also considered this drum fixture and this other rattan fixture, both would have blended nicely, too!)
Pink + Sand Rug (the size for this room is 7’6” x 9’ 6”)
New Natural Wood Flooring (I couldn’t find a link to the one my sister in law decided to put down the week before we did this flip but this one is very similar)
Simple Art: Sunny Side Up | Flower Canvas
